Can't find much info on this on google or anything. But I have been told that you have more chance of being struck by lightening than being in a plane crash. Its this true?

I think I need to stop watching Air Crash Investigations. lol.

Yes, that is very true. According to this site:

http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/statistics.htm

The average number of people killed by lightning every year for the past 10 years is 39. That would total about 200 people in the past 5 years.

In the past 5 years (since August, 2006), there have only been 2 crashes in the US that involved fatalities - totaling 99 people. During that period of time, US domestic commercial airlines have carried more than 3,452,640,133 passengers.

99 out of almost 3 1/2 BILLION is 0.0000028%

Crash data is available in a searchable data base here:

http://www.ntsb.gov/aviationquery/index.aspx

Passenger information is available here:

http://www.transtats.bts.gov/Data_Elements.aspx?Data=1

So you can look for yourself.

In contrast, about 100 people are killed <> in vehicle accidents within the US.

Think of all the people who fly on airliners everyday... probably millions, and a passenger aircraft crashes only a few times a year.

It always makes the news because they are so dramatic and tragic events, but you are extremely unlikely to die aboard an aircraft. I would reckon you're more likely to get hit by a taxi in the airport pickup point than fall out of the sky.

So I would say that there is a lot of truth in the saying, but I don't think it's an actual statistic.

Please don't be fearful. the percentages of stepping right into a deadly motor vehicle accident are lots greater in all probability to ensue than stepping right into a airplane crash. i became right into a flight attendant for some years and that i've got met many human beings petrified of flying yet as quickly as you do it a pair circumstances you will quiet down. Like I continually instructed my passenger... "i does not be on the airplane if i did not think of it became into risk-free" have faith me the group members #a million precedence is risk-free practices, and in the event that they don't sense risk-free they gained't take off. in case you have a great form of stress, you need to attempt having a drink till now the flight... yet purely one! And you ought to get to the airport early so which you will get a reliable seat... you do not opt to me caught in a midsection seat! good success & don't be scared :)

Most definitely. The statistic is around about 0.00030% (hope I got those 0s right!) although it does depend on what you mean by crash - a vast majority of air accidents happen on the ground! ;)
